 Mt. Shasta, population 3,600, is located 60 miles north of Redding, and 60 miles south of the Oregon border, along Interstate 5. Pine-covered mountains surround the valley, with the snowy volcanic peak of Mt. Shasta towering 14,162 feet high above it. Mt. Shasta is the second highest peak in the Cascade Range and second highest volcano in the lower 48 United States. The elevation of the city of Mt. Shasta is 3500 feet and sloping upwards. The city limits are contained in an area of 3.4 square miles but the sphere of influence extends about 41 square miles and is surrounded by the Shasta Trinity National Forest. Mt. Shasta is surrounded by natural beauty and plenty of recreational activities.
Whether its whitewater rafting, skiing, snowboarding, hiking or camping, Mt. Shasta offers many activities for an afternoon or weeklong visit. Mt. Shasta is known worldwide for its outstanding mountainous terrain and beautiful alpine lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Mt. Shasta typically has four distinct seasons with long, hot summers and cold, wet winters. Occasional thunderstorms can occur during the dry summer months and quite often these storms produce summer snowfalls on the mountain. |
